Could Short-Term Rentals Be Making Their Way To Meridian Township?

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - During the July 18th Township Board meeting, the Board discussed the possibility of creating a plan regarding a short-term home rental ordinance for Meridian Township.

Within the Township, there have been a number of locations that are using their homes as rental properties. Some of which have been properly registered and others have not. A number of concerns that stand in the way from creating an ordinance to allow home sharing within the Township.

One of the reasons expressed for short- term rental homes that was brought up during the meeting was due to being located close to a large campus, the area can become crowded and hotel rooms may become unavailable. Short- term rental homes could be a possible alternative for visitors.

Residents who reside close to the homes that have previously been rented out have brought noise complaints to the Board's attention for homes being rented near Lake Lansing. The Board went back- and- forth when discussing whether or not it was worth the time and effort to create an ordinance.

Those effected residents were not in attendance at last night's meeting, so no one was able to speak on the action item that was presented. The Board decided to table the discussion to another time in order to determine whether the short- term home rentals were worth exploring further.
