Meridian Township Board Discusses Audible Pedestrian Signals

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At the June 6, 2017 Township Board meeting, the Meridian Township Transportation Commission followed up with the Board on their request to implement audible pedestrian signals (APS) at all four corners of Okemos and Jolly Roads.

Residents feel that the Township should consider a complete street ordinance which insures public access for all citizens. The audible pedestrian signal will provide services for blind or visually impaired residents as well as those with cognitive disabilities.

A estimate budget of $20,000 was issued, but not solidified.

A resolution from the Township Board was the goal for many residents, but Trustee Phil Deschaine, says more staff needs to be engaged to make a final decision on this request and they are not a policy making Board.

"Is this the best investment for this enhancement?" was a question proposed by Trustee Dan Opsommer.

And Treasure Julie Brixie believes other intersections such as Hagadorn and Lake Lansing may benefit more from the investment than intersection at Okemos and Jolly.

Members of the Board all had different suggestions and concerns about the APS request and agreed to vote and draft up a resolution for the next meeting on June 20th, 2017.
