ORIGINAL STORY: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Residents in East Lansing and Haslett had the opportunity to cast their ballots in a Special Election today, May 2nd. Polls opened at 7:00 am and closed at 8:00 pm.

Haslett residents had the opportunity to vote on a millage renewal of 21.44 mills for Haslett Public Schools.

Ann McCarthy of Haslett voted in the election at Haslett Community Church.

"We support the schools," said McCarthy who voted yes for renewing the millage.

East Lansing voters also had the opportunity to vote on a bond proposal requesting ninety-three million dollars to build five new elementary schools.

John Wagner, an East Lansing resident voted at New Hope Church.

Wagner said he voted no. "They wanted to tear down rather than rebuild. On one hand schools are showing their age, on the other hand we could rebuild infrastructure of the schools with significantly less money," said Wagner.

The voting locations for Haslett voters were precincts 1-5 and precinct 20.

The East Lansing voting locations were precincts 18 and 19.

Brett Dreyfus, Meridian Township's Clerk discussed the importance of this election even though it is small. "All Elections are Important. Usually elections like this have a very small turnout. I encourage voters to come out and have their views expressed regardless. Take the time, there'll be no lines, like I said it's a smaller election with one question you can get in and out in five minutes."
