Biofeedback: Control Your Own Symptoms

Biofeedback: Control Your Own Symptoms

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - An alternative healing practice that is gaining national attention is biofeedback.

Biofeedback allows people to control bodily processes such as heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and skin temperature.

"The people that I tend to see here are often people who have fallen through the cracks of traditional western medicine. Medicine hasn't worked for them or they have some kind os side effect. So they turn to natural; methods for help," said Gretchen Morse, neurofeedback specialist.

Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that uses messages from the brain.

With biofeedback, you're connected to electrical sensors that help you receive information about your body.

Most people who use biofeedback have conditions that are worsened by stress, so relaxation is key.

Biofeedback can improve conditions such as high blood pressure, headaches, and chronic pain.

"Large entities like Mayo Clinic, and the American Society of Pediatrics are now endorsing biofeedback. It's a chance to learn about yourself and your nervous system. And a chance to be a part of helping to reduce your own symptoms," Morse said.

Eventually, you can practice the biofeedback techniques you learn on your own without a therapist or equipment.
