Lansing Softball Tops Okemos on First
Game of Season

OKEMOS - Lansing Catholic Softball defeated Okemos, 2-0, on both teams’ first game of the season last Wednesday.

After much rain the previous day, it was still a gloomy day and the game started slow.

Most teams have had to practice inside until this week because of the rainy and cold weather, so the Chiefs and the Cougars were getting used to being outdoors in the beginning of the game.

The game remained 0-0 until the fifth inning.

A Lansing Catholic third-base steal by No. 11 leads to a run at the top of the fifth.

A few pitching mistakes throughout the game, with pitches from both teams’ pitchers hitting girls at bat, handed the first base to the opponent.

Lansing Catholic’s No. 11 was on fire, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead at the top of the seventh.

Despite in the last inning and up two, the Cougars still had to make sure the Chiefs didn’t get to home base.

One left out and an Okemos player on third base, a far hit and one on the scoreboard for the Chiefs, but that isn’t enough to catch up to the Cougars.

Lansing Catholic takes home the very first win of the season, 2-1.

Cougars senior captain Claire Phifer said the team had a rocky start, which is normal for a first game, but that communication put them on track to get the victory.

“We really worked well talking to each other and making sure we were on the same page for every play,” Phifer said.

Both schools head into Spring Break this week, making Lansing Catholic’s next game against Bath High School on April 11 at 4 p.m. and Okemos’ next game at Waverly High School on April 12 at 4 p.m.
