Veteran’s Property Tax Exemption 
Available for Residents

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Meridian Township recently announced that a disabled veteran or the unremarried surviving spouse of a disabled veteran, who was discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States under honorable conditions, may qualify for the property tax exemption allowed in Michigan Compiled Law 211.7b, as amended.

Those who are entitled for exemption must meet one of the following criteria:

• Have been determined by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs to be permanently and totally disabled as a result of military service and entitled to veterans’ benefits at the 100
percent rate.

• Have been rated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as individually
unemployable.

• Have a certificate from the United States Veterans’ Administration or its successors certifying that they have received pecuniary assistance due to disability for specially adapted housing.

• Is the surviving, unremarried spouse of a veteran who was otherwise entitled to the exemption.

Those who may be eligible will need to apply by submitting an affidavit before the close of the December Board of Review on December 10, 2013. If the exemption is granted, it will cancel taxes for 2013. The affidavit is located on the Meridian Township website.
