Township Board Continues to Discuss Funding for Local Street Improvements

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Discussion of funding for Meridian Township's Local Street Improvement Program continued at the April 23rd Township Board meeting.

This discussion comes following a presentation about the different options the board had to consider regarding the street improvement program, including a bond for $35 million of 1.95 mills, or a special assessment option with a 10-year payback.

Discussion was focused heavily on the bond option as Township Manager Frank Walsh clarified how those numbers would play out for Township residents.

Trustee Dan Opsommer said he was ready to support the bond.

"I'm ready to support it, I mean it's time to fix the roads and if anything, I just hope our counterparts at the county will join us in this endeavor because the state's not going to step up and it's time to take care of it," Opsommer said.

The Township Board also discussed keeping a closer eye on street contractors in order to ensure the job was done effectively.

The Township Board will continue to discuss the bonding option and needed ballot language for that bond at their next meeting.
